Thai DPM sorry for flood-affected firms
BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - The Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong has apologized for the failure of his government to protect automotive manufacturers from floods but promised it would help them get through the crisis.
A total of 198 industrial plants located within the Rojana Industrial Estate compound in central Ayutthaya province, many of which are automotive manufacturers, have been inundated following the entry of northern runoffs.
Authorities have been closely monitoring the water situation in Bangkok's suburban Pathum Thani Province, where the Navanakorn Industrial Estate, with its 227 factories and up to some 120,000 workers, and the Bang Kradi Industrial Estate, with its 50 factories, are located.
Kittiratt on Tuesday discussed with authorities of the finance, the industry and the labour ministries about the impact of flooding on manufacturing and industrial sectors. He said the cabinet has formed three more committees to work out effective flood prevention to prevent similar problems from occurring in the future and it should also come up with clearer assistance plans to help affected manufacturers before October 17.
Besides, the cabinet has resolved to draw a 10% share, about 80 billion baht, from the government’s fixed budget of 800 billion baht in the 2012 fiscal year, he said, noting that the sum will be spent on rehabilitating the country and improving flood prevention systems.
Kittiratt also acknowledged that the amount of present floodwater has been unprecedentedly huge and inner areas of Bangkok could suffer from flooding. He urged all parties to work together to fight against the flooding.
The deputy prime minister also asked people not to rush into panic-stockpiling of consumer products. He assured that the government and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will do its best to protect the inner areas of the capital. (TNA)
