Thailand’s Phuket Island hit by mudslides

PHUKET, October 11 (TNA) - Heavy rainfall on Monday night triggered mudslides in Phuket city, smashing away properties and cars in a village. Local officials are on full alert as more damage is unfolding.

Phuket Deputy Governor Somkiat Sangkaosutthirak led an inspection on Nattakamol village in Phuket’s Rasada Sub-district on Tuesday, after mudslides falling from the Khao Toh Sae Mount hit the community at 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Initial reports cited structural damage on homes, and thick mud covering about a kilometre of road surface, while other roads bore cracks and shattered. The Rasada municipality is now working to reopen local traffic.

Meanwhile, Rasada Mayor Surathin Leanudom has urged locals to evacuate as a precaution to persisting rainfall and potential mudslides.

The mayor said a damage survey on local homes will be carried out quickly in order to provide support, while officials will keep a close watch on the areas. (TNA)
