Suvarnabhumi international airport prepares for floods
BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - Authorities at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport convened on Tuesday to map out emergency plans for potential flooding as the northern runoff approaches Bangkok.
Spokesperson of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Wilaiwan Nadwilai, said the authorities have asked the Rural Roads Department to dredge the Lat Krabang canal to facilitate water drainage to the southern area of the airport, where officials are speeding up the discharge of water into the ocean.
According to Wilaiwan, the airport has installed a flood prevention system which includes small reservoirs and 3 meter high flood walls. The reserviors are inter-connected to six canals and is capable of holding some 4 million cubic meters of water each, while two water-pumping stations are operating in the airport's south, which could discharge as much as 1 million cubic meters of water per day.
