Thai government will not declare state of emergency in flooded areas: DPM

BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit said on Tuesday the Thai government will not declare a state of emergency or announce October 12-14 as a public holiday in flood-affected areas.

Yongyuth said officials nationwide are doing their best to cope with the flooding and provincial officials are reinforcing and repairing floodwalls that collapsed. He noted the government has not declared a state of emergency, reasoning that it will affect tourism as many areas in the country are still safe.

The deputy prime minister also dismissed a proposal for the government to make October 12-14 a public holiday, saying the government still wants public officials to continue their taking care of flood victims. He said he will not allow officials at his ministry to take leave for the time being while those who have will be required to return to work.

Yongyuth asked the people to remain calm, saying it is also not necessary to stockpile of food products at the stage. (TNA)
