Floods affect Thailand's rice mortgage scheme

BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - Thailand's ongoing inundation crisis has affected the government's rice mortgage scheme, which was launched on October 7, as more than 8 million rai of rice fields (2.5 rai = 1 acre) across the country have been damaged by floods.

Panpimon Chanyanuwat, Director General of the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives' Department of Agriculture Extension, conceded on Tuesday that the widespread inundations over the past couple of months have resulted in an inactive response to the government's rice mortgage scheme from local farmers.

Panpimon said that some farmers appeared to be confused between the rice mortgage scheme and a compensation they could seek from the government due to damage caused to their rice produce from the ongoing floods.

Panpimon insisted that she has told officials, farmers and other parties concerned to ensure transparency, as well as legal practice of the rice mortgage scheme. (TNA)
