Government saving remaining Thai industrial parks from flooding
BANGKOK, October 10 (TNA) - The Thai government is speeding up all-out efforts to prevent the country's remaining industrial estates, especially a high technological industrial park, from floods.
Thai Vice Industry Minister Suphab Klikhajai has confirmed that the country's two major industrial estates in the central Ayutthaya Province, including Saharattana Nakorn Industrial Estate and Rojana Industrial Park, have already been affected by floods.
Suphab acknowledged that the Ban Wah, or Hi-Tech, Industrial Estate, also in Ayutthaya, has not yet been flooded and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinnawatra and Industry Minister Wannarat Channukul are, on Monday, inspecting measures to prevent the Ban Wah Industrial Estate from floods, saying that there are 143 factories producing auto and electronic parts, with a total investment value of some 65 billion baht and some 50,000 workers totally, located in the Ban Wah Industrial Estate; so, well-prepared flood prevention measures are necessary, as any inundation in the industrial site may further affect Thailand's auto and electronic parts production and exports and probably cause a slowdown in national economic growth.
According to the vice minister, ongoing floods at the Rojana Industrial Park has caused a temporary closure of all 198 factories with a total investment value of 56 billion baht and over 90,000 workers affected.
The vice minister noted that the government and his ministry are closely monitoring the water situation in Bangkok's suburban Pathum Thani Province, where the Navanakorn Industrial Estate, with its 227 factories and a total investment value of some 40 billion baht and up to some 120,000 workers, and the Bang Kradi Industrial Estate, with its 50 factories and a total investment value of 25 billion baht, are located to timely prevent floods or to deal with any flooding emergency.
Meanwhile, the Industry Ministry has ensured large-scale business operators, including car manufacturers, that the Thai government has now focused on the country's flooding crisis and has mobilised all agencies concerned for an integrated planning to prevent inundations in additional areas and to urgently solve flood-related problems.
