Hat Yai prepares for floods in late October

SONGKHLA, October 10 (TNA) - Hat Yai, Thailand's major business hub in the southern Songkhla Province, has prepared for possible inundations from late October onward, when floodwater from upper parts of the country are feared to hit the southern region.
According to Hat Yai Mayor Prai Pattano, a flood prevention and relief command centre has been set up and flood warning signs with multi-coloured flags for alerting people of the updated inundation situation, from safe to critical, have been installed in 17 main areas across the Hat Yai Municipality.
Presently, Prai acknowledged, the green flag, indicating the normal or safe situation with no flooding threat, has been installed in Hat Yai, saying that the red-flag with siren would be immediately installed if there was a need for local people to urgently evacuate to safe grounds due to any approaching floods.
In addition, Songkhla's irrigation office has opened water stations at two main canals, including the one located at U-Tapao Canal, so that downpours and water from upstream areas, expected to reach the Thai South in late October, will be quickly released from the Hat Yai Municipality, noting that the two canals have their total drainage capacity of up to 1,075 cubic metres per second.
