USAID to join Thai flood relief operation

BANGKOK, October 10 (TNA) - US Ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenney has said the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will join Thai authorities this week in providing flood assistance.

The US ambassador visited the government’s relief operation centre at Don Mueang Airport on Monday. She was received by Transport Minister Air Chief Marshall Sukumpol Suwanatat.

Speaking to the press after her visit to the flood relief centre, Ambassador Kenney conveyed condolences to the Thai people from the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

She said the purpose of her visit to the centre is to gauge for other needed assistance, which could possibly involve long-term support through US weather technology, and covering aid funding, personnel assistance, and integrated monitoring efforts.

Ambassador Kenney underlined in her statement of the friendship between Thailand and the US, saying also that her government has already given 3 million baht funding to the Thai Red Cross Society. She added that the US has its troops and helicopters ready at dispense if necessary. (TNA)
