Thai troops, police fully assist flood victims

BANGKOK, October 10 (TNA) - Thai troops and police have been actively assisting people in flood-hit areas across the country, as the flood victims have been urged to abandon their houses and assets and evacuate to safe places, particularly those in critically-inundated parts of the country.

Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa told reporters before accompanying Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to inspect the flooding situation in the central Ayutthaya Province on Monday morning that officers of the Royal Thai Armed Forces have been dispatched to all flood-stricken areas throughout the country to assist local people; while teams of psychological experts have also been sent to encourage people in critically-flooded parts to abandon their houses to safe grounds.

General Yuthasak insisted that temporary shelters provided by the Thai government, including military camps, could cater all flood victims, calling on the public in non flood-hit areas to hand out their donations for affected people at the government's relief operation centre for flood victims at Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport, rather than travelling to flood-battered zones themselves to distribute their relief packs, for the sake of their own safety.

Acting National Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong said that some 900 police officers from non inundated-areas have been deployed in all flood-stricken parts of the country to support local officers and authorities in rending urgent assistance to needed people, calling for public donations of more motor flat-bottom boats to support the ongoing flood relief mission.

Meanwhile, Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha acknowledged that the Royal Thai Army has prepared two relief support plans, one is for urgently assisting flood-affected people and the other for preventing and dealing with approaching inundations in new areas at risks, anticipated to be hit by floods by next week.
