Thai PM orders construction of more dykes; Postpones overseas trip

BANGKOK, October 9 (TNA) - As more storms are expected to hit Thailand during the current monsoon season, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday decided to postpone her trips to Malaysia and Singapore between this Tuesday and Wednesday to an indefinite period.

Simultaneously, Yingluck has ordered provincial officials, including those in Bangkok, to construct more dykes to prevent floods from further damaging economy.

The prime minister early Sunday chaired a meeting of the flood relief centre, established last Friday at the capital’s Don Mueang Domestic Airport, and reportedly expressed her concerns over a new storm, expected to hit lower Northern and Central provinces, next weekend. She ordered the provincial officials to build barriers to prevent floodwater from damaging those provinces and their economy.

As for Bangkok, she ordered the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to construct dykes on the eastern side from Ayutthaya province for a total distance of about 34 kilometres. The construction job will be jointly held responsible by the Transport Ministry and the BMA.

Besides ordering for the discharge of excess water into the sea, Yingluck ordered for an evacuation of flood victims to safer areas. Police will be responsible for evacuating victims in areas where the number of sufferers is small while the Defence Ministry will evacuate people in larger number such as in Lop Buri and Nakhon Sawan provinces.

Yingluck also said she and Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul have decided to postpone trips to Malaysia and Singapore, scheduled earlier October 11-12, because of her worries over the flooding situation in the country.

The planned visits were aimed at introducing herself as the new government leader of Thailand to the two fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. (TNA)
