Heavy storm to hit over 10 provinces, including Bangkok

BANGKOK, October 9 (TNA) - A storm which would bring heavy downpours is expected to pass through 10 provinces, including Bangkok, on Sunday, according to a report issued by the Royal Irrigation Department.

The report said heavy rains would continue until this Wednesday and those provinces in the East, the lower part of Central and the upper part of the South would be hit by the storm.

So far, floods are now persisting in 30 provinces nationwide, except the South, it said. An extra surveillance is being given on Bangkok’s neighbouring provinces including Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao and Nakhon Nayok as more floodwater is on their way towards these provinces.

However, positive news is seen after Boon-in Chuenchavalit, Director of Bhumibol Dam in the northern province of Tak, said water volume flowing into the dam stands at 117.71 million cubic metres on Sunday with signs that it would be less than the past four days. Water to be discharged from the dam to Chao Phraya River could be lessened if there is no rain within the next one or two days.

A similar situation also takes place at the Sirikit Dam in Uttaradit Province.

Sirikit Dam Director Thanarat Pummakasikorn said the dam is still safe even though water inflow stood at 60 million cubic metres daily in the past few days. On Sunday, the water inflow is projected to decline to 50 million cubic metres and the dam might reduce discharging of water stored at the dam to cushions impact on people living in the lower North and the Central regions.
