Thailand, Myanmar to enhance all-level ties

BANGKOK, October 7 (TNA) - Thailand and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation at all levels and to explore ways to develop further cooperation between the two member countries of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Thailand has also urged neighbouring Myanmar to reopen a border checkpoint connecting Mae Sot District in Thailand's northwestern Tak Province with Myanmar's Myawaddy Province, which has been closed by the Myanmar side since July last year and has also called for progress on a plan to upgrade the Singkhon border pass in Thailand's upper southern Prachuap Khiri Khan Province as a permanent border checkpoint to facilitate trade and transport between the two ASEAN neighbours.

Bangkok has also promised continual support for the development of infrastructure in Myanmar, including the construction of a road in Myanmar and repairs of the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.

All the agreements and issues were concluded and discussed during Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's one-day official visit to Myanmar earlier this week. (TNA)
