Factories in central Thailand flooded

AYUTTHAYA, October 7 (TNA) - A large number of industrial factories in Thailand’s central Ayutthaya Province, most of which belong to Japanese investors, have been flooded, causing damage at least 100 billion baht.
Overflows from the Noi, Chao Phraya, Pasak and Lop Buri Rivers, as well as floodwater from adjacent Lop Buri Province have hit larger areas of Ayutthaya, as inundations have been expanding into the entire province's 16 districts, 14 of them have been heavily hit.
Most the affected factories in Ayutthaya are sub-contractors producing vehicles spare parts for major plants operating in other industrial estates; so it is expected that vehicle production in Thailand should be affected this year; while some factories may have to temporarily shut down for, probably, as long as three months.
Thai authorities have initially estimated the damage to the industrial plants, as well as urban and commercial areas in Ayutthaya at at least 100 billion baht.
Thai Permanent Secretary for Industry Vitoon Simachokdee said as several industrial factories have been hit by severe floods, the Thai government is considering offering soft loans with a waiver of annual fees for the affected business operators through the government-run Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand (SME) Bank. About 520 industrial plants in 19 provinces have been affected by Thailand's ongoing flooding crisis since late July. (TNA)
