Low interest loans to be given; fee exempted for flood-hit factories

BANGKOK, October 6 (TNA) - Permanent Secretary for Industry Vitoon Simachokdee revealed Thursday the Thai government is considering offering loans with low interest rates as well as exempting annual fees for flood-affected factories.

Vitoon said the government-run Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand is preparing to extend low-interest rate loans while his ministry is also thinking of not collecting annual fees from industrial operators whose businesses are hard hit by the ongoing floods.

The state-run Board of Investment may also exempt duty for imported machinery to replace the damaged ones.

Governors of industrial estates, meanwhile, have requested industrial entrepreneurs to provide assistance to their employees, he said, adding that this year’s flooding has caused damages to industrial plants much larger than the past years.

So far, about 520 plants in 19 provinces have been affect ted by the floods, Vitoon said. Most affected factories in Ayutthaya are sub-contractors and produce auto spare parts for major plants operating in other industrial estates so it is expected that vehicle production would be affected this year.

According to Mr. Vitoon, damages inflicted on machinery, goods and industrial buildings by the floods are estimated at 1.2 billion baht, while some factories may have to temporarily shut down operations as long as three months. (TNA)
