Ayutthaya prison falls to floods, inmates evacuated

AYUTTHAYA, October 6 (TNA) - Floodwaters have beset a prison in Thailand’s central Ayutthaya Province, forcing the evacuation of some 1,700 inmates.

Director-General of the Corrections Department, Suchart Wonganantachai, reported the incident on Thursday as floodwaters at the compound reached two-metres deep after the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya overflowed its banks.

According to Suchart, efforts to rescue and relocate inmates have been a daunting task due to delays with the opening of prison doors.

Suchart said officials have been coordinating with the government and private entities to help with the transfer of inmates to other prisons in Lop Buri, Sing Buri, Chai Nat and Pathum Thani provinces. (TNA)
