Thai PM guarantees transparency in rice mortgage scheme

BANGKOK, October 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered officials in charge of the government rice mortgage scheme to ensure transparency and protection of farmers’ benefits.

Yingluck made the call when presiding over Thursday’s meeting with provincial governors and officials of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives. She called for legitimate steps to be taken in the process of rice storage and issuance of mortgage certificates, stressing also that pledged-rice must come from farmers, not middlemen.

During the meeting, Yingluck said she is confident the scheme will boost the rice price and reflect its real value while generating higher income for farmers. She said recent policy flaws have been addressed to ensure transparency and maximum benefits for farmers.

The price scheme, which will be translated into action on Friday, will see the state purchasing some 25 million tonnes of domestic rice. (TNA)
