Thailand to use nuclear technology for mudslide study

BANGKOK, October 5 (TNA) - Secretary-General of Atoms for Peace Office, Chaiwat Toskulkao, has said Thailand plans to apply nuclear technology for a study on mudslide after having succeeded in over 100 projects in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The secretary-general made the remarks on Wednesday during an official visit to Thailand by Director-General of IAEA Yukiya Amano.

Chaiwat said Thailand realizes benefits from nuclear technology in administering or managing water resources and the IAEA will send its experts to Thailand in 2012 to assess what this country wants and to transfer needed technology as well.

He said Thailand will apply nuclear technology for use in the study of mudslide occurrence with an objective to cushion mudslide incidents in future.

Meanwhile, Amano, Director-General of IAEA, said nuclear energy is not only used for electricity production but also in developing several other fields.

It can be developed and used in public health, agriculture and food, and water management, he said. (TNA)
