Bangkok residents need not worry about floods

BANGKOK, October 5 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is confident of handling floods in Bangkok and assures residents that the capital will not be seriously inundated.

The BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department unveiled an updated review on the water level in the Chao Phraya River, stating that the river crested at 2.45 p.m. on Wednesday, while the water level at Pak-klong Talad Market was measured at 1.81 metres above the average sea level, which was still high.

The report also found water running past Bangsai District of Ayutthaya Province at a rate of some 3,731 cubic metres per second.

BMA Spokesperson Jate Sopitpongsatorn told reporters that Bangkok residents should not be paranoid but be alert to the changing water situations, especially those living by the riverside.

Asked if runoffs from Ayutthaya Province would devastate the capital, Jate said the overall situation should be under control. He noted that the Drainage and Sewerage Department had worked to drain out as much water as possible, and remove weeds from major canals to facilitate the flow of water. (TNA)
