Flood warnings issued for 19 provinces in Thai northeast

BANGKOK, October 5 (TNA) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Wednesday issued fresh warnings for people living in 19 northeastern provinces to brace for possible flash floods, runoffs, overflows and landslides from October 5 to 8.

The department reported that Typhoon “Nalgae”, which has weakened to a low pressure as it made landfall in northern Vietnam on Wednesday, as well as the strong southwestern monsoon hovering over the Gulf of Thailand, will both bring heavy rains to the country’s northeastern areas.

People living in low-lying and riverside areas in 19 northeastern provinces have been urged to stay abreast for a dangerous week, while assistance can be made via the department's hotline number on 1984 around the clock.

Meanwhile, four districts of Tak province have been identified as at risk from floods after the national water committee passed a resolution on Tuesday night to open Bhumibol Dam’s spillways to release water.

Water levels in Sam Ngao, Ban Tak, Muang Tak and Wang Chao districts have been expected to rise by one meter at 4 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The water will reach Nakhon Sawan Province in two days before it flows to the Chao Phraya river basin. (TNA)
