Helicopters carrying necessities for flood victims

BANGKOK, October 5 (TNA) - Five helicopters carrying medicines and necessities left the capital Wednesday to deliver them to flood victims in Thailand's central province of Lop Buri.

The helicopters, each carrying 50 large boxes of medical supply, were seen departed by Public Health Minister Wittaya Buranasiri. Because of the existing high level of floodwaters and strong currents in the province, cars and boats were unable to render assistance to flood victims.

Medical supply and necessities would be given to flood victims in seven different points in Ban Mi and Tha Wung districts.

Health Minister Wittaya said helicopters would from now on deliver supplies to flood victims on a fortnightly basis while the public health office in Lop Buri would provide food to the victims via the army in the province.

Admitting that the flood situation in several Central provinces, especially Ayutthaya and Lop Buri, was worrisome, he said hospitals were instructed to map out preventive measures and to evacuate serious patients to hospitals elsewhere.

Plans were also made to move patients receiving treatment at Don Phut Hospital in Saraburi province as the area was heavily flooded, Mr. Wittaya said.

The hospital previously housed victims whose homes were inundated but it was now almost deserted due to heavy floodwater surrounding it. (TNA)
