Bangkok monitors Chao Phraya River for anticipated high tides

BANGKOK, October 4 (TNA) - The Department of Drainage and Sewerage of Bangkok has revealed that the flood situation in the capital is under control, although the water level in Chao Phraya River will be closely monitored in anticipation of high tides late this month.

Director Sanya Cheenimit confirmed on Tuesday his department has kept the situation under surveillance and that it will take more precautions from October 25 to 27 when high tides are expected.

He noted that the water level in the Chao Phraya River crested at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and water was running past Bang Sai District of Ayutthaya Province at a rate of 3,500 cubic meters per second, which is still safe.

Sanya said his biggest concern now is the amount of rainfall the capital city received this week, noting that precipitation in Bang Kapi District reached some 79 millimeters on Monday night.

Meanwhile, in Tha Phrajan area adjacent to Thammasat University, sandbags have been placed to protect the campus from floodwater. One-meter-high walkways have been built at the Tha Phrajan market to comfort buyers and shopkeepers. (TNA)
