Thai Cabinet approves appointment of new NSC chief

BANGKOK, October 4 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet has approved the appointment of outgoing National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potephosree as the new Secretary General of the National Security Council (NSC), paving the way for the official appointment of a new national police chief shortly.
Deputy Government Spokesman Anusorn Iamsaad told reporters that the decision was made at the Cabinet's weekly meeting on Tuesday, along with its approvals of other changed government positions, including those in the Ministries of Public Health, Interior and Education, as well as the Public Relations Department.
Police General Wichean, whose new appointment will take effect after His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's soon endorsement in a royal command, will replace former NSC chief Thawil Pliensri, who has been transferred to an inactive post, an advisor at the Prime Minister's Office.
Police General Wichean's appointment paves the way for the appointment of Deputy National Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong, an elder brother of exiled ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's ex-wife, Khunying Potjaman Na Pombejra, and now the acting national police chief, as the new Thai national police chief.
Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung, who oversees the Royal Thai Police, said that the Royal Thai Police board will hold a meeting on Wednesday to consider promoting Police General Priewpan to the police top post.
Meanwhile, one of the newly-appointed senior government officials includes Thirapong Sodasri, who takes his new office as the director-general of the government's Public Relations Department under the Prime Minister's Office. (TNA)
