Thai red shirt leader surrenders to police

BANGKOK, October 4 (TNA) - Darunee Kritboonyalai, a leader of the red-shirted United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), who has been on the run since “red-shirted” protests ended last year, has turned herself into police and vowed to fight her case in court.

Accompanied by her lawyer, Darunee on Tuesday reported to Lumpini police station in Bangkok to acknowledge charges of illegal assembly on April 3 last year, in violation of the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO)’s order.

Darunee has genuinely denied the allegations, arguing that she had the constitutional right to hold a peaceful rally. She also claimed to had left the protest venue before the CAPO’s order was issued.

Darunee said that last year’s unrest prompted her to flee the country, but that she decided to return to fight her case as the political situation was back to normal.

According to the report, the red-shirt leader has left the police station but is expected to be summoned later for questioning. (TNA)
