ADB, ILO urge Asian governments to eliminate employment inequality

BANGKOK, October 4 (TNA) - Governments in the Asia-Pacific region have been urged to adopt policies to eliminate employment inequalities.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have suggested that the governments sustain regional growth and promote job equality to curb persistent vulnerability and poverty in the region. The statement was carried out at a seminar on creating quality employment in Asia and the Pacific, jointly organized by the ADB and ILO at Thailand’s Foreign Correspondent Club in Bangkok.

ADB and ILO representatives pointed out that nearly seventy percent of employment in Asia came from the informal sector, which means workers get lower wage, limited security and chance to voice their opinions about matters that affect them. The main challenge for the governments and relevant agencies is to upgrade workers’ skills along with business infrastructure and pay extra attention to health investments. The governments can also support the Labor Unions of each country by enabling them to engage more in collective bargaining.

The event on Monday provided an opportunity for experts and policymakers to discuss the conclusions of the Special Chapter in the ADB’s annual publication - Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific, entitled “Toward Higher Quality Employment in Asia”, which presents latest economic, financial, social, environmental and Millennium Development Goals indicators for members of ADB.
