Sales at S. Korean art fair hits slump for first time

SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- Sales at an international art fair in Seoul this month dropped for the first time since its launch six years ago according to figures released Wednesday, in possibly another sign of jitters amid the protracted economic slump.

About 14 billion won (US$12 million) worth of artworks were sold at the Korea
International Art Fair (KIAF), held Sept. 18-23, compared to 17.5 billion won in
2007, marking a 20-percent drop, KIAF officials said.
Last year's art fair was reputed to be a success with some 64,000 visitors and
208 foreign and domestic participating galleries.
The number of attendees this year fell to just over 61,600, the officials said.
Sales jumped more than 50 percent from 4.5 billion won in 2005 to 10 billion won
in 2006 and from 730 million won in 2000 to 2 billion won in 2004.
The number of attendees in 2002 was 18,000.
The KIAF, a project organized by the Gallery Association of Korea, was
inaugurated in 2002 to promote the development of the art market in Asia.
