Thai PM to visit Myanmar on Oct 5

BANGKOK, October 4 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is scheduled to pay a one-day official visit to Myanmar on Wednesday, aimed to introduce her new administration and to strengthen bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Yingluck told reporters that she will meet and hold talks with Myanmar leaders, including Myanmar President Thein Sein, to explore ways for enhancing bilateral trade, investment and other relations, as well as to discuss the possibility of opening more permanent border checkpoints between the two member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Puea Thai premier is also expected to raise continual Thai-Myanmar efforts against cross-border crime, including drug and human trafficking, as well as illegal Myanmar immigrants, during her one-day trip to the close ASEAN neighbour.

Premier Yingluck is scheduled to leave for Myanmar Wednesday afternoon and to return to Bangkok shortly before midnight, after attending a dinner banquet hosted by the Myanmar President in Naypyidaw, Myanmar's capital. (TNA)
