SOME 260 CONVICTS IN NORTH SULAWESI TO RECEIVE SENTENCE CUTS

Manado, Sept 25 (ANTARA) - A total of 260 people jailed in North Sulawesi for involvement in various criminal acts will get special sentence cuts to mark the Islamic Idul Fitri holiday, an official said here on Thursday.

North Sulawesi provincial justice and human rights office spokesperson Zountje Tumbel said the 260 inmates were from a number of correctional institutes and prisons in the province.

She said they were currently being held in the prisons of Manado, Kotamobagu, Bitung, Tondano, Tahuna, Amurang, Tomohon, Ulu Siau, Tagulandang, and Lirung.

According to Zountje, 11 of the 260 prisoners would walk free from prison after having served their jail terms while the rest would be given remissions of between 15 days and two months.

Prisoners in Indonesia are traditionally granted sentence cuts of up to six months twice a year, one to mark Independence Day and another to mark major religious holidays such as Idul Fitri and Christmas.

Zountje said the remissions would be given to all prisoners who had shown good conduct, except those on death row or serving life sentences.
