Thai PM still positive on handling Bangkok floods

BANGKOK, October 3 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has renewed her confidence in handling anticipated floods in Bangkok, saying it should be under control.

Yingluck told reporters she will be holding another video conference with the Bangkok governor on Tuesday following her session with the governors of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi on Monday.

Yingluck said she has told governors to start coordinating with Irrigation Department officials in assessing whether each section of flood barriers will suffice further rises in water.

Asked if she feared a delay in the flood alert system as recently reported in Chiang Mai province, Yingluck responded saying the problem with Chiang Mai was likely a case of an abrupt warning made against a large-scale barrage of floodwaters, which in turn resulted in untimely evacuations.

She added that in the past, seldom has there been much talk about the precarious state of floodwaters, causing floodwalls to be rendered ineffective to overflows. To this extent, she said concerned officials have been ordered to improvise integrated flood alert systems by incorporating necessary data on changing water conditions.

Meanwhile, Air Chief Marshal Sumet Poh-manee, Chairman of Airports of Thailand (AOT), said the ongoing flood crisis and its spillover effects have now become a concern for the management of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

He said airport officials there have been told to monitor for any rise in water surrounding the compound, and if necessary, to drain out the excessive amounts. (TNA)
