Thailand’s slums network seeks UN aid on land issue

BANGKOK, October 3 (TNA) - The Four Regions Slums Network has petitioned the United Nations to pressure the Thai government into solving land and housing problems for the poor.

Early Monday morning, representatives of the needy marched down Bangkok’s Royal Plaza all the way to the UNESCAP headquarters on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

Chairman of the Four Regions Slums Network, Ponganan Chuangtham, said after submitting the petition to Adnan Aliani, chief of the UNESCAP’s Sustainable Urban Development Unit, that the UN should be more proactive in promoting human dignity in Thailand, particularly by urging the government to lay down relevant land policies and redistribute non-productive lands to the homeless.

He cited an example with the Filipino government, which recently responded to the people’s fundamental rights by promising to offer houses to some 100,000 poor families in five years. (TNA)
