ACEH DRAINAGE SYSTEM TO COST RP1 MILLION
Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - The building of a drainage system in Banda Aceh is predicted to cost Rp1 trillion, an official said.
"The total cost of the project is predicted at Rp1 trillion," Deputy Chairman of Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency Edi Purwanto said here Wednesday.
The drainage system will be used as channel of sea water in Banda Aceh.
"Since the tsunami several years ago, the land surface in Banda Aceh had sunk 40 cm. Because of that, sea water often inundated the city," Purwanto explained.
In the mean time, Banda Aceh Mayor Mawardi Nurdin said almost half of the city area is affected by the sea water since the tsunami.
"The effect from the sea water can still be seen in about five kilometers from the coastline, especially when it is raining," Nurdin explained, adding drainage system is needed to cope with the problem.
"At this moment, Banda Aceh is divided into eight zones. Zone 1 and 2 had already a good drainage system while the rest still need a big project," the Mayor said.
"So far, the project is done with the help of the Japanese government and the World Bank," said Nurdin, adding that the building of a drainage system in Banda Aceh would boost the city's economic growth.
