GOVT TO REDUCE DEATH RATIO TO ONE IN 30 ACCIDENTS

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - The government is determined to reduce the death rate during the Idul Fitr holiday season to one in 30 accidents, minister of transportation Jusman Syafii Djalil said here on Wednesday.

He said total accidents in the country every year were still high causing up to 30,000 deaths a year.

"The biggest number of accidents occur on the road," he said.

He did not tell how many died in traffic accidents last year.

Before the Global Partnership for Road Safety said that the number of deaths in traffic accidents in the country was still very high reaching around 30,000 a year.

The number could increase unless something was done by the government and the offices concerned, the non-governmental organization said.

The organization led by former transportation minister Giri Soeseno Hadihardjono continued campaigning road safety.

The minister said to reduce the number of traffic accidents the government had increased the number of CCTVs from 13 to 51 put up in several road sections to monitor traffic.

In addition to those installed in crossings, airports and stations the number reaches 70 units, he said.

So far, he said the CCTVs were installed in a number of accident-prone points from the Merak seaport to Java's northern coastal line.

To transport companies he also appealed to install global positioning system to monitor their fleets. In case a driver is driving recklessly the company concerned could monitor it.

He said two transport companies that had installed GPS units so far wer PO Primajasa and PO Nusantara.

The police would also conduct operations to assure safety during the holiday when a lot of people would travel to their home villages to celebrate the Islamic post-fasting holy day of Idul Fitr.
