Flash flood to hit 11 Thai provinces

BANGKOK, October 2 (TNA) - Officials in 11 provinces in the North and Northeastern provinces have been warned of flash flood and mudslide which could erupt in the next few days while the number of those killed in the flooding disaster which has been a nightmare in Thailand for about two months now has soared to 206, a senior official said.

Chatpong Chatphuti, Deputy Director-General of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said in his capacity as Deputy Director of the 24/7 Emergency Operation Center for Flood, Storm and Landslide that concerned officials in the 11 provinces are on alert.

To date, 23 provinces, mainly in the North, Northeast and Central regions, have been hit by flood and about 559, 900 families have been affected, Chatpong said. A total of 206 persons died, two missing, about 7.5 million rai of farmland was damaged and 150 roads in 20 provinces were under floodwaters and unusable by vehicles.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra inspected water levels at piers along the Chao Phraya River and found that some areas near the river banks were inundated, causing hardships to foreign tourists visiting the Rattanakosin Island.

Accompanied by senior officials of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the city governor said workers of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (MA) had placed more sandbags in some areas in an attempt to prevent floodwater from reaching the inner part of the capital while his agency was monitoring water levels in canals and the river closely.

He urged people living in the capital not to be panic and said he was confident that the BMA could cope with the impact of typhoon ‘Nalgae’, which is expected to hit Thailand this week. This typhoon is expected to bring heavy rains to the northeastern region and provinces along the Andaman coast. (TNA)
