Survey: Thai people could go penniless with bulk spending
BANGKOK, October 1 (TNA) - A recent survey showed that Thai people aged 18 upward, whose monthly expenditures are about 9,000 baht from their below 12,000-baht monthly revenues, appear to be at risk of busting their pockets and creating debts.
The survey, conducted by Assumption University’s Social Innovation Management and Business Analysis Centre, found that an average person spent some 9,197.99 baht from an average revenue of about 11,300 baht a month, or more than 80 per cent of his/her monthly earnings, highlighting the risk to bankruptcy and the need to rely on external financial sources.
The ABAC poll showed that the majority of expenses, or a monthly average of some 5,222.22 baht, went to food costs, followed by a monthly average of some 3,789.90 baht for transportation and a monthly average of some 1,416.67 baht for recreational activities.
However, the survey drew up a safe zone for those earning some 75,000 baht a month, whose monthly expenses average some 34,471.37 baht, a group found just below 10 per cent from the total population.
The survey suggested that the Sufficiency Economy Principle advised by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej be observed among low-income families and communities, otherwise government policies aimed to alleviate the rising costs of living, namely the 300 baht daily minimum wage, and the 15,000 baht minimum salary for bachelor’s degree holders, may backfire on the society and lead to more social disparities.
The ABAC poll involved some 2,764 samples of selected individuals aged 18 upward from 12 Thai provinces, namely Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Chonburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Sawan, Prachuap Kiri Khan, Phuket and Songkhla, from August 15-September 30, 2011.
