China to become Thailand’s number one export market

BANGKOK, October 1 (TNA) - The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) said on Saturday that China is expected to emerge as the number one importer of Thai goods, with Thailand's export growth to the Chinese market having been expanding from last year, by some 22-27 per cent this year.

According to the KRC, the optimistic projection was made after Thai exports to China in August 2011 remained rosy growing by some 50.1 per cent year-on-year, totally worth about 2.7 billion US dollars; while imports from China in August also shot up to the new record level at approximately 3 billion US dollars, making China becoming Thailand's second largest import market over the past five months.

Despite the sharp increase in bilateral trade between Thailand and China, the leading Thai think tank cautioned that Chinese consumers may be more careful in spending in the coming months due to worries over the ongoing financial crisis in Europe and the United States and Beijing’s more tightened policies, including a reduction of subsidy on certain industrial products for exports, the strengthening Chinese yuan currency and rising inflation.
