Thailand on alert of new typhoon
BANGKOK, October 1 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered her Cabinet members who are now inspecting flood-hit provinces to coordinate closely with provincial authorities in relieving inundations in their respective areas, as well as in providing healthcare and food to local flood victims, as concerned agencies have now been on high alert for a new tropical storm expected to hit Thailand next week.
Speaking to the ministers via a video conference from the Government House in Bangkok on Saturday, Yingluck also boosted the morale of all parties who are helping the flood victims. A total of 23 Thai provinces, mainly in the North and Northeast, have remained inundated since late July, with a number of affected people having lost their homes and farmlands.
Yingluck insisted that she will assign the Thai Ministry of Science and Technology to find ways with concerned government agencies in relieving the country's flooding crisis, saying a satellite will be used to give warnings on floods in advance to local people in the future.
According to weather experts, another Typhoon ‘Nalgae’, which is now heading towards the Philippines, is expected to hit Thailand from October 5-6, bringing heavy downpours to the Thai Northeast and provinces along the southern Andaman coast.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm ‘Nesat’, which has killed about 50 people in the Philippines, has been weakening and is not much affecting Thailand. (TNA)
