NFI: Thai food exports are on the rise despite floods
BANGKOK, October 1 (TNA) - The National Food Institute (NFI) has projected that Thai food exports will reach some 950 billion baht this year, exceeding an earlier target of some 900 billion baht, despite the country's ongoing flooding crisis.
NFI Chief Petch Chinabutr said that the rising Thai food exports have been cushioned by flood contingent plans drawn up earlier by the national food industry, noting that exports of Thai food products should reach at least 800 billion baht in 2012.
Petch acknowledged that any further increase in Thai food exports depends on economic conditions in the United States and Europe, as a recession in the world powerful economies will lower demand for Thai food products, and that, given the vulnerable world oil market and impacts from the country's ongoing flooding crisis, local entrepreneurs and farmers may have to consider raising prices of their products to cope with extra costs and flood-related losses.
The NFI chief predicted lower food access in Thailand during the first quarter of next year, as farmers will still be limping off against the aftermath of this year’s flooding. The NFI chief, however, brushed aside fears of food shortages, saying local consumers can still rely on other food supply, in substitution of damaged farm products in flood-hit areas.
Meanwhile, NFI has joined forces with the Thai Ministry of Industry and local producers to launch a project, as part of nationwide celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 84th birthday on December 5, 2011, under which 84 leading local food manufacturers demonstrate Thailand's outstanding production capabilities, based on the best practices of “Green Productivity and Continuous Improvement, which is proven to help reduce their annual operational costs by up to 51 million baht and about 2,827 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions totally.
