Thailand, Cambodia agree to reduce troops near Preah Vihear Temple

BANGKOK, September 30 (TNA) - The military said on Friday that both Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia have now seen no use of maintaining their troops along the common border, as both Thai and Cambodian governments have agreed that they should spend their state budgets for other purposes, instead of paying for the deployment of inactive soldiers along the border.

Lieutenant General Thawatchai Samutsakorn, Commanding General of Thailand’s 2nd Army Area, told reporters that Cambodia has already withdrawn some 3,000-4,000 soldiers from the Thai-Cambodian border near the ancient Phrea Vihear Temple adjacent to Kantharalak District of Si Sa Ket Province in the Thai Northeast; while the Thai side has pulled out some 2,000 troops from the area.

Lieutenant General Thawatchai acknowledged, however, that Thai and Cambodian troops have remained at the points A, B, C and D specified by the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a demilitarised zone between the two neighbouring countries.

The army regional commander said that border trade between Thailand and Cambodia has continued as usual, and that an alms-giving ceremony will be organised at the Chong Sa-ngam Border Pass in Si Sa Ket's Phu Sing District on October 9 to boost bilateral relations between the two neighbours, both are member countries of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
