Flood prevention confirmed in Bangkok
BANGKOK, September 30 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has confirmed its capability of flood prevention measures, through bringing run-offs from the country's upstream areas under control.
BMA Deputy Spokesman Wasan Meewong said on Friday that the City Authority has fully prepared measures to prevent and to control the run-offs flowing into the capital, as BMA officials concerned have been on high alert around the clock, particularly in flood-prone areas, as ordered by Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra.
Wasan acknowledged that the BMA has built flood prevention walls, some 2.50 metres each above the sea level, along the main Chao Phraya River's banks to prevent any overflow from the incoming run-offs and high-tides; while water pumps have also been in place to drain out the overfill water to 21 monkey-cheeks with a combined water retention capacity of 12.75 million cubic metres.
The spokesman said the Bangkok governor has also instructed all the capital's 50 districts to prepare immediate assistance for people living outside the flood walls in case that they are hit by any inundation.
Meanwhile, a flood assessment centre under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Royal Irrigation Department warned that water levels in Thailand's central Lopburi, Saraburi and Ayutthaya Provinces are expected to reach their peak on October 3-4, advising local people to prepare for evacuation and to move their belongings to high grounds.
