Vegetable prices soar during Thailand's vegetarian festival

BANGKOK, September 30 (TNA) - The atmosphere of this year's ongoing vegetarian festival in Thailand's northernmost Chiang Rai Province has been reportedly more active than last year, despite higher prices of vegetables due to a seasonal hike in domestic demand.

Ongoing floods in the country's major agricultural hubs in the northern and central regions, together with the higher domestic demand for vegetables, have driven their prices up during the now nine-day vegetarian festival, from September 27-October 5.

A recent survey conducted at Chiang Rai’s two major municipal fresh markets found that local vendors had raised their vegetable prices by 10-30 baht per kilogram; while sales of pork and fish had dropped to only 20-30 per cent. Some vendors said they have stopped selling meat products during the nine-day vegetarian festival. (TNA)
