Quick assistance directed to flood victims

BANGKOK, September 30 (TNA) - Flooding in Thailand's northern Chiang Mai Province is being relieved, but severe floods have remained in several other provinces.
Chiang Mai Governor M.L. Panadda Disakul inspected his province's flooding situation on Friday morning, saying that water inflows have been returning to their normal rate and the level of the Ping River has been quickly receding, and that unless there were more downpours, inundations in provincial urban areas should recede over the next couple of days when local workers will then quickly clean the northern Thai resort city to welcome visitors again.
However, in nearby Chiang Rai and Lamphun Provinces, local households have remained in trouble due to floods, as municipality workers in Chiang Rai's Wiang Suay Sub-district have hurriedly built a temporary wooden bridge to facilitate local students to go to school; while three local rivers in Lamphun are overflowing, forcing local people to evacuate to high grounds.
In the Thai Northeast, the Ubonrat Dam is quickly discharging water due to excessive intakes which have reached 60 million cubic meters a day, affecting people living in both above and below the dam, as flooding levels have been rising in many areas below the dam and over 100 square kilometers of local paddy fields have been damaged.
In the Thai East, heavy downpours are continuing in the eastern province of Prachin Buri and the Prachin Buri River has overflown to Kabin Buri and Sri Mahaphote Districts. (TNA)
