MALAYSIA IMPORTS 500,000 COCONUTS FROM INDONESIA
Kuala Lumpur, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Malaysia's Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) imported 500,000 coconuts from Indonesia recently to anticipate a surge in demand for the fruit in the runup to the Idul Fitri (Muslim post-fasting month) festivity, a spokesman said.
"We imported from Indonesia because demand for coconuts is predicted to reach 30 million. The normal monthly demand for coconuts is 28 million," FAMA Director Mohamed Shariff said here Wednesday.
The imported coconuts arrived in Malaysia gradually starting Friday last week.
"Supply of other vegetables is guaranteed to equal demand," Shariff added.
Malaysia also imported 10,000 cows from Thailand to meet its demand for meat during the Idul Fitri holidays.
