Man shot dead by police in Sydney
SYDNEY (AAP) – 29 SEPT - A man has been shot dead in his car by police outside a shopping centre in Sydney's north west.
Just after 12.50pm (AEST) on Thursday, three plain clothed police officers were seen running from the nearby local police station to the corner of Castle and Pennant Streets where they confronted a silver Toyota Hilux ute.
Police said in a statement that they received a triple-0 call reporting a man was in a vehicle in Castle Street allegedly armed with a gun.
They spotted the vehicle near an intersection.
"A number of shots were fired resulting in the man dying at the scene," they said.
Police said the man has not been formally identified but he is believed to be aged in his 30s.
They have placed the crime scene and a number of surrounding streets into lockdown.
Luke Timp was outside the Castle Hill Community Centre just 40 metres from the scene when the situation unfolded.
"They ran out in front of the car and flashed their police badges," Mr Timp told AAP.
"Then the man in the car must've done something because they all pulled out their weapons and then we heard three loud bangs.
"And then all the cops came running out from (the police station) and started getting people to evacuate from their parked cars and closing off the area."
Mr Timp said that one of the officers pulled a gun from underneath a tarpaulin and placed it on the median strip next to the vehicle where it remains.
The body of the man is still in the vehicle with a green tarpaulin draped over the front covering the body.
The Castle Hill Community Centre, which includes the library, was full of students who were studying for their HSC and witnessed the incident.
Theresa Sakr was inside the library when the drama unfolded and witnessed the incident.
"They circled the car and pulled their guns and they were standing around the car, guns out, and it all just happened really fast," Ms Sakr told AAP.
"I heard what would've been two or three gun shots.
"I was quite shocked after I heard the first couple."
Christina Callaghan was also inside the library studying when panic struck the high school students.
"We heard like three shots, we thought maybe it was a car breaking down or something," Ms Callaghan told AAP.
"We heard the gun shots consecutively and they were really loud.
"Then everyone started screaming inside the library so we ran over to the window and had a look."
Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford is expected to brief media at the crime scene at about 4pm (AEST) about the incident.
