Thai PM calls for updates on flood crisis

BANGKOK, September 29 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to update its report on the country’s flood crisis as she prepares the dispatch of her ministers to disaster zones.

The call was made at a video conference on Thursday, joined by DDPM officials and governors of devastated areas, including Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen.

Yingluck told the meeting the situational review is needed in order for the government to deliver more aid to the people, including knock-down houses and survival kits.

According to the report, the Chiang Mai governor reported that flooding has gone beyond control in Fang District, an area pounded largely by flashfloods and landslides. However, he said the level of the Ping River should subside to four metres by Thursday midnight from a stop in rainfall.

Khon Kaen Governor, meanwhile, reported that the water level at the Ubonrat Dam has remained a critical, reaching some 102% of the total dam capacity. However, he affirmed that the level will still be manageable if the province is not hit by another storm. (TNA)
