Seoul`s French cultural center celebrates 40th anniversary

SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- The French cultural center in Seoul will celebrate
40th anniversary of its establishment this month with a variety of cultural
programs that will bring Picasso and Matisse here, the French ambassador to South
Korea said Wednesday.
"A new French festival was launched in Seoul last year after South Korea and
France celebrated the 120th anniversary of their bilateral relations in 2006. The
goal was to showcase a series of events every autumn to reflect the best of
French culture," Ambassador Philippe Thiebaud said.
The "France Express" festival, starting Thursday, will present 40 cultural
programs in the coming months, including dance, music and theater performances,
as well as visual arts, literature and cinema at venues around Seoul.
"We are presenting the second festival this year with richer and more varied
events as we celebrate the 40th birthday of the creation of the French Cultural
Center in Seoul, which still plays a crucial role for exchanges between our two
countries," Thiebaud said through a translator.
The highlight of the celebrations will be an exhibition of masterpieces from the
Musee National d'Art Moderne in Centre Pompidou. The exhibition, titled "Arcadie:
Image du paradis," will be held in the Seoul Museum of Art from Nov. 21 to March
22, 2009.
The National d'Art Moderne is one of the most renowned cultural centers in the
world, with a collection of some 58,000 artworks, including paintings,
sculptures, photos and videos by some 5,200 artists from 1905 to the present.
On display at the exhibit will be 80 modern and contemporary masterpieces by
major artists of the 20th century, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque,
Pierre Bonnard, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, Giorgio de Chirico, Francis Picabia,
Fernand Leger, Wassily Kandinsky and Jean Dubuffet, the ambassador said.
The theme of the exhibition explores ways in which these artists rendered the
concept of heaven in their own unique styles.
Other programs include "Les Contes de Grimm," a theatrical performance by the
Odeon Theater, led by French director Olivier Py, known for his stage adaptations
of the famed Brothers Grimm fairy tales.
The performance will run from Oct. 9-11 at the National Theater of Korea.
