2011.09.28 15:13 (UTC +05:00)
Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 28 /Trend T.Konyayeva/
Retired chief of Bank Melli Mahmoudrza Khavari has escaped to Canada, Former Managing Director of Iran’s Bank Saderat Mohammad Jahromi said in an official statement on Wednesday.
Jahromi noted that Khavari could leave the country with the support of Iranian top executive officials and individuals involved in the last financial scandal, Mehr News Agency reported.
Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Mahmoud Bahmani said in an interview with Mehr News Agency he has no any information about Khavari’s escape, but did not reject the former director general’s escaping.
Khavari sent on Tuesday a resignation letter to Minister of Economy and Finance Shamseddin Hosseini to beg pardon from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iranian people for Bank Melli’s involvement in the last corruption scandal.
Hosseini accepted his resignation and also dismissed a member of the Bank’s Managing Board Farzad Ahmadi.
Last week, 22 suspects have been arrested over Bank Saderat’s $2.8 bln corruption case. The suspects are also accused of converting a letter of credit issued by Bank Saderat’s branch in Khuzestan province to cash in Bank Melli’s office in Kish city.
