Thai Foreign Minister satisfied with UNGA response
BANGKOK, September 28 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul says he is happy with the response of the UN General Assembly when he addressed the annual gathering this week. He says the assembly commends Thailand that it is now back on the road to democracy.
Speaking to reporters after the 66th UNGA session in New York, Surapong said several countries have praised Thailand for having successfully installed a democratic government as military regimes are unacceptable to the world community.
Surapong also said following talks with other foreign ministers, he realized that there is still huge work to be done in restoring Thailand’s foreign relations. He noted that his counterparts said they wanted to see more frequent exchange visits between state officials.
Surapong added that during the UNGA session, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern over bitter relations between Thailand and Cambodia from the dispute near the Preah Vihear temple. To this end, he said Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong reported that Thai-Cambodian relations are improving and that the resolution of their dispute rests with the World Court. (TNA)
