PRESIDENT CALLS ON PEOPLE TO PAY TITHES THROUGH OFFICIAL INSTITUTIONS

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on the country's Muslims to pay tithes through official institutions so as to avoid irregularities and tragedies like the recent Pasuruan incidnet in East Java , National Zakat (tithe) Board (Baznas) chairman Didin Hafidhuddin said.
Hafidhuddin made the statement after a meeting with President Yudhoyono at the presidential office here on Wednesday.
"The president called on the people to channel their tithes through authorized bodies to avoid happenings such as the Pasuruan tragedy in which 21 people were killed in a stampede," he said.
He said the public was also sad to see people gathered at an outdoor location stretching out their hands to receive alms as had happened in Pasuruan.
"Lest the good will implied in tithe giving lead to a show of poverty, tithe givers should respect the recipients," Rafidhuddin quoted the president as saying.
He said the mechanism used by Baznas in distributing tithes called first for the collection of data on the would-be recipients and then visiting their respective homes to present the tithes.
On Wednesday, President Yudhoyono came to the Baznas office to hand over Rp20,390,620 as the tithe on his annual income from October 2007 to September 2008 and an additional Rp1,225,000 tithe for some 35 poor people.
"President Yudhoyono's trust in Baznas should be made an example by the people from all walks of life," Rafidhuddin said, adding that the head of state also called on central and regional government officials to channel their tithes through official institutions such as Baznas.
Baznas is an official institution which was formed through Presidential Decree No.8/2001 to collect tithes from the public and to distribute the funds nationally to the targeted recipients.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) recently also called on the people to channel their tithes through authorized bodies in order to prevent a recurrence of the Pasuruan tragedy.
"Take a lesson from this tragedy and don't distribute tithes by inviting crowds but deliver them to those who deserve the alms," MUI Chairman for economic, tithe and alms affairs Amidhan said.
He said obligatory alms givers who had no time to deliver the tithes to those who deserve it, could channel their donations through official tithe and alms bodies.
