Qatar among Long List of Books Nominated for Etisalat Award for Arabic Children Literature
Abu Dhabi , September 26 (QNA) - The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) has selected the State of Qatar as one of its long list of books that have been nominated for the 2011 Etisalat Award for Arabic Children s Literature. The members of the judging panel have selected the top ten books among the books entered the competitions.
The nominated books are Umi Wa Al Tadkheen (My Mother and Smoking), from Lebanon-based publisher Dar Asala Publishing and Distribution; Ana Fi Baten Mama (I am in Mum s Tummy), from Saudi Arabian Kadi and Ramadi Publishing House; Hamda Wa Fesikrah (Hamda and Fsikrah), from Qatar-based Bloomsbury Publishing House; Rejel Shadi (Shadi Foot) and Endama Maradat Sadekati (When my Friend Got Sick), both from Lebanon s Youki Press; Zaman (Zaman), from Syria s Smart Fingers Publishing; Teery Ya Tayara (Fly the Plane), from Egypt s Nahdet Misr Publishing; Qisat Qablallnawm (Before Sleep), from Palestine s Tamer Community Education Foundation; Limaza La Ara Ma Yaroun (Why I Don t See What you See?) from Talah Educational Means; and Nasaih Mouhmalah (The Neglected Tips), from Dar Al Hadaeeq, Lebanon.
Speaking on the occasion, UAEBBY President HE Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi said, "The Etisalat Award for Arabic Children s Literature has seen a noticeable annual growth in quality and quantity, form and content, diversity of subjects and methods of presentation.
The Award has also made a considerable contribution to creating sustainable excellence in children s literature, by promoting fair competition amongst publishers, writers and illustrators and encouraging them to producing interesting, exciting and attractive children books".
"The Etisalat Award for Arabic Children s Literature is stimulating the Arabic children s book community, with the result that better books are being produced and delivered. The initiative has become a turning point in urging imagination and creativity in Arab World, stimulating children s imaginations and creativity, and these books are very important cultural elements for modern children," Sheikha Bodour added.
Etisalat s General Manager: Northern Emirates Abdul Aziz Hamad Taryam, extended his best wishes to the ten nominees, saying, "The Award has proven tremendously successful in fulfilling its objectives since its inception three years ago, and it has attracted some of the largest and most renowned Arabic children s book publishers, authors and illustrators. The Award recognises excellence and encourages the production of creative, high-quality, original publications, steering publishers away from constant replication and translation".
"Etisalat is proud to support this Award as it honours the Arabic children s literary sector and focuses on delivering high-quality content for Arabic children, which contributes to building a cultured generation that understands their rights and duties in terms of contributing to national growth and prosperity," Taryam added.
The judging panel includes five members (a publisher, an author, an illustrator, a critic and an international expert) from the Arab World and Europe. The panel will hold extensive meetings over the next few days to evaluate the top ten books in order to select the final shortlist of five books. The winning book will be announced on 16 November, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Sharjah International Book Fair.
The AED1 million Etisalat Award for Arabic Children s Literature is awarded each year to the best Arabic children's book, with 50 percent of the prize money going to the winning publisher, and the remaining 50 percent being divided between the author and illustrator as per the decision of the Jury. Last year s Prize went to Egypt-based publishing house Dar El Shorouk for Al Noqta Al Sawda (The Black Dot), written and illustrated by Walid Taher, while the first Etisalat Award for Arabic Children's Literature was awarded to Lebanon-based publisher Dar Al Hadaeq for its book Ana Oheb (I Love), written by Nabiha Muhaidali and illustrated by Nadeen Saidan.
