Commerce Minister guarantees no loss from rice mortgage scheme

BANGKOK, September 26 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Premier and Commerce Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong insists the government-initiated rice mortgage scheme will not result in losses to the state.

Kittiratt made the assurance on Monday following doubts hurled by former governor of the Bank of Thailand, M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, that the scheme could potentially create over 200 billion baht in losses.

Kittiratt said it is observable that many parties have been concerned about the initiative due to past flaws in its implementation.

However, he assured the current government under the Pheu Thai Party will impose anti-graft measures and set up a working committee to ensure transparency and accountability at all stages of the programme.

The Thai official added that as commerce minister he will work to ensure that farmers fully explore their benefits and that domestic rice prices remain at reasonable levels. (TNA)
