Gov’t considers prisoner transfer for two Thai detainees

BANGKOK, September 26 (TNA) - Justice Minister Pracha Promnok said Monday Thailand has never signed a prisoner exchange agreement with other countries but admitted that it has several prisoner transfer treaties in force.

Pracha issued the remarks in response to media questions over the possible transfer of two Thai activists, Veera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipatanapaibul, from Cambodia to Thailand so that they can serve their remaining jail terms at home.

The justice minister said he has counterchecked with the Corrections Department and found that Thailand has 31 prisoner transfer treaties in force, including the one signed by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in 2009. He noted that he will announce their details to the public at a later date.

Meanwhile, Preecha Somkwamkid, Veera’s younger brother, said he has spoken the issue with members of Thailand’s ruling Pheu Thai Party, who favoured the idea of prisoner exchange over a royal pardon for the two Thai detainees. (TNA)
